I saw an oven like this when I worked at ITT Electric. It was used to vulcanize the rubber parts of the connectors they manufactured at the plant. We nearly had a fire one night because of the oven.

  Vulcans come from RUBBER?

  Heh heh. Good one! ;-)
Actually vulcanize comes from the name of the (if I remember correctly) Roman god of fire. It's a heating process that gives the rubber some hardness while keeping it's flexibility. It's been a long time since I worked there.
