upvc? and what's so bad about 'em?

They're ugly on a period building, or any building really, plus they don't match all the rest of the windows (since they're plastic, white and with two large panes, when the rest are wooden, green and with several smaller panes). UPVC stands for Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride - I had to look that up. :|

  ah ok
plastic windowframes are ugly indeed. From close up they might look like wood but from anywhere between a mile and 3 metre you see it's plastic. :-(

If you've got original hardwood windows, it's better to try and retrofit double glazing panels into the hardwood frames, rather than replace the lot with UPVC, as the hardwood will outlast the UPVC easily anyway.

Like fitting another window behind the original? I see that's what the NHS did at Craig Dunain.

That's usually more about patient protection, especially if the inside one is made from LEXAN.

I thought that, but there are some with three plates of glass.

UPVC isn't environmentally friendly either. Indeed it sucks.
