  I wonder what they used the ramps for. They are too steep for man-hauled carts (I think) and I don't see any remains of a cable system.

  Could be, but I doubt it. That would give far too much coal dust (unhealthy and, more important to bosses: explosive)

  Agreed...the coal wasted would also probably be substantial... if coal did run down them, then it would have been contained in a sluce or pipe of some sort.... it's the mystery of the ages.

  or their could have been some kind of conveyor belt which is gone now.
