Is that a drain down on the floor? The thought of dead bodies doesn't bother me much, but the "juices"... oi.

Yea, it's definitly a drain. There was one on the opposite side of the room as well.

You knoiw, I was thinking about it...I doubt that there were all that much juices flowing down that drain. I mean, the place is a couple blocks from a hospital, if anything, I would think this fridge was for temporary holding at the most. I mean, why the hell would anyone be autopsied or embalmed at a center for the severely mentally handicapped?

ehhh...the drain is probably for condensation from the cooling unit. However, there is always the chance of the bodies coming in with injuries...

In the opposite end of the building they have 2 very large hospital rooms, 2 ray machines, and a dentist's office, so this place was no joke as far as medical care is concerned.

the mistreatment/neglect of of people with mental handicaps - i think autopsies could have been needed.

not to mention

the state might have taken care of the funeral/embalming costs so they had their own morgue for those reasons since all people with mental handicaps are taken care of by the state.

where did you hear about mistreatment or neglect?
Posted by VicAnnCam 6/28/2005 2:47 AM | remove
ive known about it for sometime now its a huge deal amongst those kinds of centers and even assisted living centers- i volunteer with the programs that set up activities for the mentally disabled (going to the movies to braves games to whatever) and i volunteered at centers that take care of the mildly to severely mentally disabled/handicapped- there are horror stories.

Posted by DjMalign 6/28/2005 5:29 AM | remove
FYI brook run had an excellent record whihc made it a sad story because it closed due to budget cuts. it was actually state of the art at the time
Posted by toeknee 6/28/2005 7:47 PM | remove
yeah, in all my research, I had only found one instance of mistreatment, in which the mistreater actually reported the incident themselves...

well the closing down of the center im sure was a product of newt gingrich- who back in the day cut off many programs/funding for people with mental handicaps in georgia.

There once was a place called Brook Run
As an abandonment it was fun
We've been here more times
Than Never Ithaca rhymes
So let's just call this place done.

  I concur.

Back on topic...
I read that Brook Run closed because people were looking for more private care. Apparently it got cheaper and there was more of it, so people would rather have their loved ones at home with a nurse than off in some institution.

That's what I read about the closing. I read that there are smaller private homes for these people and some in-home care available too.
