Brilliant exploration, dudes! The winch and basket were found on site I assume? I'd love to hear more about your testing and preparation.

Yes, we uncovered the winch and basket from a load of tangled metal. I presume that it was delibiratly desguised to stop idiots like us using it. Preparation consisded of lowering me down through a hole in the floor. I could only fall a few meters maximum, so we tested it by jumping around violently in it. It all held very well. We also found a hand held oil dispenser and a bottle of oil, so we gave it a good oiling all round the moving parts. Then we lowered it down the silo without me in it. All went fine, so I donned my respirator and bandana, and down I went! BlueShiva went down as well. It smelt very strongly of grain down there, even through my FFP3 (P100) filters. Next time we go Bealge wants to go down. At least he will have the assurence that it actually works 100%!

In fact, I think I was a little mean when I chose what photos to put on this site. I will upload some more to make this gallery better and more explanative.

Thanks, Corvid. Glad to hear you did some thorough testing before doing the deed.
Still, you guys might want to get your heads examined. You know, as a precaution :-)

He he, we are just willing to take small doses of risk to get you guys some good photos! One of the most risky places we have been is up some much larger silos. From wall to wall it was about 24 meters, and about 80 meters tall. To get to the top we had to climb a ladder going the whole way up, with no real safety gear. We had some rope round our chests in case we needed a break, but that was it. Check out the "silo special" gallery: http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=22542

In fact, if you want them, I have a couple of videos I took: One of Tax winching BlueShiva up, and one of me down the bottom of the silos.
