What is a lathe (as in: unrelated to plaster?)

Here's what my dictionary says: Lathe -- machine tool for shaping metal or wood; the workpiece turns about a horizontal axis against a fixed [cutting] tool.

Record lathes are very different to normal ones, but the principle is the same.

Actually that is the remains of a Vinyl record press the Valves (with the springs in them) are stama valves that controlled the steam to the press
