Description
Closer view of the substation door. I'm not going in there, and I'm not touching that isolator either.

  Awww!

That door is fifty years old. I remember these from my hometown, and I was around five then. I even know what the sign read once, even though it's too rusty to read now ('Kindunos -- Thanatos', danger [of] death, sounds like a black metal band name, doesn't it?).

The point being, there's fifty year old high voltage transformer in there, and it's STILL humming away happily. And it's probably been forgotten completely by the electricity company (the lock was ancient too). Scary!

But I'm going to try and get into the locked factory floor (adjacent to this transformer) to verify if that was the vinyl production plant.

By the look of the door and isolator switch, there's a fifty-year old

yeah but as it's been locked for 50 years, there's probably nothing that touched it. And transformers tend to stay alive as long as they don't burn down. And they would've burnt down if there would've been a shortcut.

It's a good point. And it's obviously not alarmed! So it's a matter of either sneaking a peek from inside (I think the substation is accessible from inside the locked factory floor), or picking a 50-year old padlock.

Something to think for the next time (which may be relatively tame, as I'm planning to take a music industry friend along who hasn't done this before).

I doubt it's accessible from the inside - if it belongs to the power company, then it's not.

I think the picture of the inside agrees with you, at least at first sight: http://www.uer.ca/locations/viewgal.asp?picid=110409

The brick wall to the right where all the fuseboxes is is the back of the substation shed. Looks like it's topped with concrete (I thought it might not have a ceiling at all), but there may be holes big enough to sneak a peek/photos through.
