It's a woodburning stove. Hard to tell with all the clutter, but you can see the chimney pipe coming off the back of it.

This house is most likely early 1900's. Notice the lath and plaster walls.

Lath and plaster was used until the early 1950's or so and up until even the 1980s in some commercial construction
