Slate is a very durable material; when used for roofing it can last for a couple of hundred years.

Yep! A lot of the slates on Gartloch's roof are original... And Welsh slate is even more hardcore I'm told.

It was used to haul the slate wagons up/down from the quarry level to the narrow gauge lines, which are about 50feet below.
