Holy crap, Batman! That's a shitload of waste slate... and a half. Is there no way of making the finished product more efficiently? That 10:1 waste ratio seems astoundingly high.

Would there be any use for the waste slate? That could be quite profitable for whoever comes up with that idea.

Yes, waste slate can be ground up and used as hardcore for new roads, paths etc and is getting to be quite popular.
There's currently a scheme afoot to transport 8,000 tonnes a day of slate waste by train from Blaenau. Naturally, there is a campaign to oppose the scheme by people who live near the railway line but who apparently 'didn't realise' that freight trains might run up and down it. Of course, these people are all from outside Wales and are not bothered about the jobs/money generated by the scheme. I will say no more!

I hate fuckers who go and live next to abandoned railways then protest when they're reactivated. Not like you didn't know, fucker!
Also, locally they're really protesting against a new side spur off the main railway as it would generate a traffic hazard and noise. It will, however, take 100 trucks *per day* off the road, the trucks going trough the center of the village while the side spur crosses only 1 road outside the village!

It's always the incomers protesting against anything useful... usually ones who live in the area a few days a year.

Yeah... We now even have a nature club protesting against the "reactivation" (it was never deactivated) of a rail line - while on their web site they claim they want to invest in rail traffic to keeps trucks off the road.
The rail line goes right by a nature park. Guess where the trucks from that factory would go... Right *trough* the same park.

How ridiculous! Surely a diesel train would be less disturbing to nature than dozens of heavy goods vehicles doing the same job.

Of course! If the building of a completely new railway line was proposed, you could understand the opposition but when it's already there, just waiting to be used...makes no sense at all!!

A very common phrase. N.I.M.B.Y. (Not In My BackYard). The folks who oppose it would be all for it as long as it is someone else's backyard that is 'disturbed'.
