These are not open contact (aka "knife") switches. They are lever operated contactors - notice the shafts coming out the panels and connecting to the handles just above the hinge point. The "business end" is located behind the panel and could be quite large. Sometimes they are spring-charged, with the spring release controlled electrically to allow an external device to trip them with no human around.
