Why abandon it at that advanced stage of renovation, I wonder? New roof, windows, lintels...job's nearly finished.

Ran out of cash or health failed maybe. Shame. :(

It's nice and weathertight too, it could be a great place. The interior is bare, though the upstairs is floored.

  I'd live there...

It'd would probably be cheap to rent this peice of land and buy the house to renovate. Unless the owner insisted on buy all or nothing...

It really is very odd that work started and then stopped. The owner is a construction company, so unlikely to have run out of money. Maybe a PP violation of some sort? Planning Permission was granted back in 1994 for 13 dwellings on the site, so it worth be worth a fair bit.

There were a number of construction companies running out of cash here so that still wouldn't surprise me. As you mentioned, PP Violation? Very good possibility. I saw a building that had renovations started, then stopped and when the building became unsound due to water rotting the framing, (roof was removed) it was demolished.

Hit 'Post Comment' before finishing. The work was stopped due to a number of violations including having underage workers doing extremely hazardous work and failing to properly secure the site during the initial demolition.

The construction company which owns the site is still going strong, owns 15 acres of prime land, and does nothing with it. Oddness.

Well put, Oddness. My theory is that they may have intended to use it for something, shelved the project and are waiting for the house to rot enough so that they can have a 'legitimate excuse' to raze it.

They wouldn't be able to destroy it if it's listed though?
Posted by rainman8889 5/4/2005 3:52 AM | remove
They shouldn't but I've seen it happen here. Fothergill house was designated (listed) and look what happened. :(
Posted by lost 5/4/2005 8:04 AM | remove
What happened to Fothergill, did they really take the wrecking ball to it? :(

Newton House is listed category B which means: Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of some particular period, style or building type which may have been altered. I guess there's nothing in there to stop somebody destroying it... Sad.

Property owners will use the 'destruction by neglect' approach to dispose of a listed building. Don't carry out any repairs, leave the building unsecured, let kids wreck the place and, sooner or later, it will either get torched or fall down. Demolish the remains and apply for PP for a new build project. Happens all the time.

Yeah. Here, a building's designation can be removed if the owners file to have it removed. If the local city council doesn't challenge it in 30 days, the designation is automatically removed. That's what happened with Fothergill. The paperwork was "lost" and then 31 or 32 days later, the owners came for their demo permit and the city had no choice but to grant it.
