It's something that confuses me about all of these places. Maybe it was deteriorating as the last owners were living there, they couldn't afford to renovate it, and nobody else could afford to take it on.
The writing says "KEVIN JAYN AND TARRA WERE HERE". Inspired!

What must be remebered is that majority of these houses were built at the height of Britain's imperial power, when vast fortunes were made from trading around the world. As long ago as the 1930s, the money started to run out and the cost maintence and staffing these vast houses became overpowering, with literally thousands of superb houses either being demolished or just abandoned, with the owners usually moving into a smaller house on the Estate. Fortunately, a lot have still survived, with many of the larger ones now in the care of the National Trust.
One of the Trust's latest and largest acqusistions has been the massive Gothic mansion called Tyntesfield, near Bristol, an amzing survivor from the 1930s, practically unaltered from its heyday - even down the the furnishings.

That's a lost skill. Very few people in Britain could recreate this with today's levels of experience and expertise. Veto call centres
