I've been making regular trips to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill for years and every time I'm in town my try really hard to get into this beautiful building and every time it's too well boarded up and I often end up getting run off by the part-time (most-of-the-time) security guard that sits in her car in the vacant lot eating donuts 24/7. In probably about 10 valiant attempts over the last 2 years I've never made it in.
But on my most recent trip, as I approached the place, I realized that the usual security guard was not there. Instead, there were a bunch of pick-up trucks parked out front; workers of some sort. After a few minutes of friendly social engineering, I had free roam of the building with a camera.
The place was in incredibly good condition. It has clearly been vandalized quite a bit (I'm guessing before they got the security guard and boarded it all up really well) but there is no evidence of any type of structural decay at all. All it would take to re-open the place would be replacing a lot of broken glass and repainting over the graffiti. The hotel featured a huge, elegant lobby, an indoor pool, a night club, a conference center and a restaurant.
It's always weird for me to explore abandoned conference centers like this since I'm a mobile DJ (meaning I DJ weddings, birthday parties, proms, etc) and I DJ in places like this all the time.
