     History
This theater originally opened under the name American Theater, where it showed vaudeville acts and silent films. In 1930 it screened its first "talkie" movie, a film called Lord Byron of Broadway. In 1934 the theater's name was changed to State Theater.

By 1984 the theater was long closed and had caught the eye of the Montana State Historic Preservation Office, which wanted to restore it. Before that could happen a fire damaged the theater in 1997. It sat abandoned until restoration efforts resumed in 2011, but they quickly came to a halt in 2012 when another, massive fire completely gutted the building.

     Future Plans
It will likely continue to crumble, as Harlowton's declining populace makes any large scale restoration efforts difficult.
