According to interviews with former students, many of the first children enrolled here didn't survive the harsh winters of the early homesteading years. Students here were taught from kindergarten to eighth grade before transferring to Conrad High School about 20 miles away to finish their education. The school had a single teacher, but the person filling that role would usually leave for greener pastures every few years, necessitating a replacement. Despite the teacher turnover rate former students of the Central schoolhouse recalled in interviews that they were academically well-prepared, though they felt socially disadvantaged due to the lack of interaction with many children their own age at the schoolhouse- one person interviewed was the only child of his age in the school. The bell was swiped from the bell tower in the 1960s and the culprit was never found. Over the years the schoolhouse was used as a community meeting place, a church, a recreation hall, a 4-H clubhouse, and a voting center in addition to its use as a school .
