History
Construction began in 1897, and took 6 years to complete. Originally used primarily by tram lines and railways, the bridge now supports a large roadway, subway tracks as well as a level for pedestrian and cyclist access. Since its renovation in 1992, this bike path has been the most heavily used in North America. Throughout the 20th century, issues regarding maintenance were extremely prevalent. In 1988, for example, the bridge's structural integrity was rated 1.6 out of 7.
