The former downtown center of Haymarket. Consists of multiple buildings on a 3-block stretch of Washington Street. One block was wholly demolished in 2019, but a few buildings still exist. The remaining house-office and FD are both surrounded on three sides by an active business, a Masonic Lodge, and a well-traveled road, so they're rather tough to access. Lane's has its no trespassing signs updated every few months, but otherwise seems vacant. Entire property is ringed by a barbed-wire fence, though, and it's surrounded on all four sides by: - An active business - A food pantry - An active road - The back side of another business, which makes getting in from that side physically impossible. The semi-restored house faces an active road, and sits next to an under-construction wine bar and a neighborhood. The small white house sits next to a neighborhood. In short, basically everything is out in the open. Access isn't literally difficult, but it'd be nearly impossible without being noticed, therefore the "Difficult" access rating. 4.11.2023 - Demolished May 20th, 2019. It is now a parking lot for the Hilton Garden Inn Haystack

As for the still-existing buildings: - I have no idea of anything within either abandoned house, the semi-restored house, or the FD. - Lane's formerly operated as a flea market in the mid-2000s, and before the owner put curtains up it still seemed to be filled with what you'd normally see at one. I'd assume its still there. As for the demolished buildings: - Big Fred's was still filled with various work items you'd expect to see in a garage. - A small house/storage shed behind Big Fred's was filled to the brim with a variety of items, ranging from old toys, to golf clubs, CDs, and the like. Yours truly saved a NatGeo magazine from the rubble. - A private house behind said shed had a 70s-tastic wood-paneled living room. - Another shed had a big 90s-era CD sound system. - The big grey-blue house-turned-offices, known locally as the Colonel's House, featured a bunch of office junk.

These buildings once constituted the effective center of the town of Haymarket, but most were abandoned at various points in the 1990s and early 2000s, and fell into disrepair. Among them were Big Fred's Garage, Lane's Motor Sales, the former Gainesville-Haymarket Fire Department, four private homes, three houses converted into offices, a dentist office, and Bull Run Accounting, who were the only active business left on the main property at its time of demolition in mid-2019. As of early 2020, only five buildings of the group still exist; a still-abandoned house-turned offices across Jefferson Street from the main property, a white house down Jefferson Street, a blue house down Washington Street that has seen recent restoration work (including a new roof and the clearing of ivy from the porch), the former firehouse, and Lane's, which sees its "No Parking - No Trespassing" signs updated every few months and not much else.

- The main property, now an empty lot, is owned by a developer planning to build a hotel on the land. - The FD and next-door house-offices are owned by a winery out in the country; from town sources, the winery owner wanted to turn the firehouse into a restaurant for his winery, but there wasn't enough on-property parking and he wasn't willing to pay to have the FD abated, so plans have fallen through for the moment. - The semi-restored house recently received a new roof and shows signs of other activities, but I don't know of anything concrete. - Lane's has nothing, as far as I know. - The small white house is slated for demolition at some point.
