Designed by Leon Solomon Moisseiff (who also designed the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Delaware and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge which famously collapsed in Washington in 1940), the Manhattan was one of his many successful projects. It is considered to be a leading example of modern bridges and is used as a model for many of the bridges that followed in the 20th century. By 1917, subway tracks had also been installed. The cables are 21 inches thick, and the bridge span required 30, 000 tons of steel. in 1910, the grand archway on the Manhattan side was built in associations with the "City Beautiful" movement.
