Named for Medal of Honor recipient, Staff Sergeant Archibald Mathies, Mathies Mine was opened by Pittsburgh Terminal Coal Corporation as Mingo Mine, using old workings of the Cincinnati, Courtney and Star Mines.

The Prep Plant tunnel runs directly through the main of Cincinnati Mine, with the rest of the mine being walled off. In the early 2000's, the tunnel was used to test an autonomous mine mapping robot nicknamed Groundhog. (alongside another in Burgettstown, PA)

On February 20th, 1944, Staff Sergeant Archibald Mathies (1918-1944) was onboard a B-17G ("Ten Horsepower") on an attack on Leipzig, Germany when it was attacked by a squadron of enemy fighters, killing the co-pilot, and wounding the pilot and radio operator. The pilot was rendered unconscious and the plane was heavily damaged. Sergeant Mathies and other crewmen were able to right the plane and fly back to England, where they contacted the control tower and reported the situation. Sergeant Mathies and the navigator volunteered to attempt to land the plane. Other members of the crew were ordered to jump, leaving Sergeant Mathies and the navigator on board.

After observing the distressed plane from another aircraft, Sergeant Mathies' commanding officer decided the damaged plane could not be landed by the inexperienced crew and ordered them to abandon it and parachute to safety. Demonstrating unsurpassed courage and heroism, Sergeant Mathies and the navigator replied that the pilot was still alive but could not be moved and they would not desert him. They were then told to attempt a landing. After two unsuccessful attempts, the plane crashed into an open field in a third attempt to land. Sergeant Mathies, the navigator and the wounded pilot were killed.
