 Overview
 Description
Once was one of our most beautiful church in Montreal, the Saint-Alphonse-D'Youville Church remained vacant since 2007. Until the Groupe Van Houtte proposed the project to make condos and offices inside, the church was only used for concerts and few ceremonies, so of course she was still being maintened...

When i first got inside the church, i was amazed by the size of the main room, the french gothic look that the church have is pretty unique because here in Montreal, i would say that there is not many churches with this kind of architecture. The fact that everything was still there, untouched, like a mass could be tomorrow surprised me to be honest, at this moment i wasn't even sure if the church was really vacant.

After visiting the entire place i grabbed my camera and took few pictures quickly and headed to the top of the bell tower to drink some beers with my friend (not the mention that like every other bell tower, it was full of pigeon shit). The bell tower had about 8 bells with different sizes, some pretty smalls, and two of them were really huge.

To conclude this exploration, we got back down the ladder and saw janitors cleaning the floor so we decided to wait about fifteen minutes and finally made our way to the exit.

  •  Interesting Features
When i first entered the church, it was still in a really good shape, there was not a lot of decay besides the water getting inside in few corners. The basement was already stripped out and the back part was almost finished for condos.

I would say the the main room was pretty insane to see due to its size and the gothic style it had. But the fact that it was not decayed was like exploring an active church, even if it was vacant for about 10 years, everything was still there and the janitors were still cleaning the place up for severel events like orchestra concert and stuffs like this.
     Security Measures
  • fences
  • part-time guard
  • locked gates
  • workers inside
  •  Historical Dates
    Built: 1932
    Closed: 2007
     Required Equipment
  • flashlight
  • rope
  • gloves
  •  Recommended Equipment
A rope was needed to get inside since the only entrance was a window 2 floor above the ground level... It took us about 30 minutes to get inside the first time. The bell tower was pitch black and you had to climb for about 5 minutes different ladders, so you definitely needed a flashlight too.
