     History
Dublin Gulch is a group of cave dwellings that were carved into soft volcanic rock by prospectors during the Death Valley gold rush. Exact historical records of the location are hard to find but most accounts date the creation of the homes to the early 1900s (some as early as the 1870s during the nearby Noonday Silver Mine boom). Miners were most likely the first occupants but others lived here as well after the miners moved on to better prospects. In fact, some of the cave homes were still in use up until the 1970s. A number of them were comprised of several rooms, one even having a split level. Apparently these cave dwellings were once home to Shorty Harris (founder of the Harrisburg and Rhyolite townsites) and the Ashford Brothers (founders of Ashford Mills). The volcanic ash in which the homes have been carved reportedly came from a Lava Creek eruption in Yellow Stone National Park over 600 thousand years ago.
