     History
The word Calaboose is derived from the Spanish "calaboso" or dungeon. It was commonly used during the 19th century especially in the Southwest United States to describe any jail typically a local or city jail.

This one was built in 1885 at a cost of $490. It served as the city lock up for minor offenders until 1904. At some point there was an escape that involved a fire inside. It was used as a warehouse until 1914 but then sat pretty much vacant and hidden by trees and brush for almost a century. There is some very old graffiti scratched into the walls inside and it was in pretty poor condition when I visited here in 2005.

Subsequently The City has moved it and partially restored it along with another historical building. Its now on display in its new location, Singleton Plaza.
