 Overview
 Description
Brownsville General is a three-story facility with a center section and two wings. Some patient rooms are still set up with bed, wheelchairs, tray tables and curtains. There are other facilities in the basement including a kitchen and rehabilitation area. It is large enough that it takes up the majority of a city block. There are plenty of neighbors around but they don't seem to mind.

     History
Brownsville General Hospital was built on the site of the former Brownsville Public School with construction completed in 1916. The partly-finished hospital began treating patients in 1914. By 1942, the small community hospital was overcrowded and an addition was approved. The addition created a third level over the central section of the hospital and raised its capacity to 100 beds. Overcrowding was still a problem and Brownsville General relocated to a larger facility in 1965.

The property was purchased by a man who reopened it as a nursing home called Golden Age. It operated until 1965 when conditions at the facility were found to be substandard and multiple code violations were reported. After Golden Age was shut down, the building was abandoned and has remained that way since.
