This building is fairly easy to access... however watch out for the business right next door. Just be quick when you're making your entrance. The roof is also collapsing!

You can see old cells including beds, cell doors, a gender segregated gym, and other random artifacts. I honestly wouldn't make a day trip of this location, but if you're around check it out!

Mecklenburg Juvenile Detention Center was built right outside of the Whitcomb Court housing projects in Richmond, VA. I'm not 100% positive when it was constructed but I read that the city operated the facility for about 30 years. They finally closed the building in 1996 which leads me to believe that it was built sometime in the 1960s.
The city decided to close the Juvenile Detention Center because it was understaffed and overcrowded, which led to it not being very secure. I read online that there were several breakouts throughout the years due to the poor security.
