Overview

Description
East of a rubble breakwater lies a small harbor almost choked with rotting piles. A car ferry dock (or possibly a railcar ferry dock) is the only old dock that still has a deck; it looks dicey. A newer dock with a good deck extends from a small active lumberyard east of here; it has warning signs. It was built amid the thicket of piles and offers great views of it; its end is broken off. Other activity; RV parking, kayak rentals (looks like fun).

Reflections in the protected waters. The small museum in town is surprisingly good. The rest of the town is boutiques, B&Bs and snooty restaurants.

History
Port Gamble began as a Pope and Talbot company town in 1849. It was more a satellite of San Francisco than of nearby Seattle. The rotting docks and piles are relics of the boom days of the timber trade.

Media Coverage

Future Plans
A campaign is underway to finance purchase of Port Gamble's land from its lumber company landlord to avoid development.
