Built by crusaders in 1179, Hunin castle, or Chateau-Neuf was described by traveler and a poet lbn Jubayr as a "Castle still belonging to franks". Defenders of the castle surrendered to Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi in about 1187, then in 1240 crusaders reoccupied it, only to be driven in 1266 by sultan Beybars I. Then the castle was long time abandoned, and occupied by Israeli troops during the war of Independence in 1948.
