     History
Poindexter Tower was built in 1960 as one of the nation's first public housing projects. It was named for Rev. James Preston Poindexter, Columbus' first African-American city council member. The tower was not built in the best neighborhood and crime soon followed. By the 1980s, the tower was notorious for crimes ranging from burglaries to drug deals to assaults. There was even a double-murder there in 1988. Poindexter Tower was purchased by a developer in 1996 with promises to remodel the building, but those plans never took hold. Riddled with asbestos and in need of major repairs, the tower closed in 2008. The City of Columbus has been planning on demolishing the tower for years but it has not yet come to fruition. Funds have been set aside and the building was demolished in the fall of 2012.
