Originally built as the home of the Meadowbrook Club, it served as the clubhouse for both their golf course and their polo club. The golf course was closed in the 1940's when US Army Air Corps sought to lengthen the runways of the nearby, Mitchel Field air base. Meadowbrook Club stopped using this facility in 1954 when the remaining grounds were taken for the construction of the Meadowbrook Parkway and moved to a smaller facility in Jericho, then to Old Westbury and still exists today as the oldest, operating, polo club in the United States. The facility was donated it to New York University in 1955. NYU used it through the 1980's as the "Antonio Ferri (thermodynamics) Laboratory." The only structure that remains of the Meadowbrook Club is a lonely plate girder bridge that at one time, carried the Long Island Railroad over a path on the club grounds.
