The supriseing part of all this the island itself has everything from really old ruins to modern. In 1991 Iraq invaded Kuwait and in so doing they also took the island. All the residents were removed and when the US kicked them out a pretty good gun battle occured. The island now is more of a get away, tourist trap for the adventurious, with any building not lived in being offered up for exploration. Ships are sunk in the small unused harbor, mosques, a powerplant, house, and schools are all left open. The island supported 2000 people and a thrieveing weekend get away before the war, and it hasn't bounced back.
