The original brownstone building was designed by noted architect Paul Botticher, who also designed the nearby Newark Boys Home in the same year. It stated as a single building, with two wings branching off a central administration section. Later, sometime in the 1890’s, A kitchen/ auditorium and hospital wing were added to the building, constructed of mixed brownstone and traprock. The brownstone was actually purchased from the nearby Baettie’s Quarry. along with the additions to the jail building, a small powerhouse was also constructed with subterrainian tunnels connecting the two. More expansion was soon necessary, though, as Essex counties larger cities became more and more crime ridden. A building for female convicts was constructed in the late 1910’s, and large concrete cellblock was constructed in the early 1930’s. Construction was common here throughout it’s 138 year history. Soon, the prisoners were moved out of the Brownstone and surrounding structures and moved to newer building on the east side of the campus. Then, in 2005, a brand new correctional facility was built along Doremus Ave. in Newark, and all inmates from the North Caldwell facility were transferred. It didn’t take longfor Essex County to sell the land the jail was on, and the buildings were demolished one by one, starting with the newer buildings. Demolition was stalled for a little while, while the historic section of the facility rotted away. After a few years, the demolition resumed until the only structure left was the brownstone building.
