 Overview
 Description
A large building constructed at the hillside, containing offices, production areas and access to the mine. The doors are locked, but some windows are broken.

There is an open horizontal ventilation shaft above the mine with potential access to the underground spaces. There is also an older shaft couple of hundred of meters from the mine. It is probably connected to the same mine, but it is blocked by ice year round.

 Interesting Features
Hardly anything has changed since the mine was closed in 1996.

The guided tours are probably worth trying - at the moment it's the only coal mine in Longyearbyen that can be visited.

Nice view to the airport runway from above.

     History
Mapping of coal resources above the Svalbard Airport began in 1928, but a mine was not opened until 1969. The mine, once producing half of the coal mined by SNSK, was closed in 1996.

Part of the mine was used as the global seed vault until the current underground storage was built nearby.

Nowadays it is possible to take a guided tour to the mine.

     Future Plans
While not protected by law as cultural heritage, it is unlikely that it will be demolished. For now it's a popular tourist destination.
