     History
Thompson Springs is a small ghost town along US Route 6 in Utah. The town was founded in the 1800s as station stop for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The town grew in prominence with the development of local coal mines in the early 20th century. Thompson Springs also provided an important stopping point along US Route 6, the first trans continental highway. The mines and the railroad service to them ceased operation in 1950 and the town began an economic decline. With the completion of nearby Interstate 70 in 1970, traffic to the town dwindled as Route 6 became a less traveled route. The town's train station continued to operate until 1984 as an Amtrak stop. Many of the town's residents moved away over time and much of town became abandoned. There are very few modern residents.
Passing through Thompson Springs, one can visit Sego Canyon (aka Thompson Canyon) where there are Native American pictographs dating back as far as 7000 BC.

     Future Plans
The operations of the nearby uranium mine may bring more jobs to the area, but a revival of Thompson Springs is unlikely. The tailing ponds for the uranium mine are planned to be near Thompson Springs. That will likely cause environmental damage and may contaminate the local water supply. If that should occur, the town will more than likely become completely uninhabited.
