 Overview
 Description
60 acre site, remains of the grandstands, betting area, racing track, kennels, restaurant, and other misc buildings.

Notes (Buffalonian): Arizona is also VERY liberal with their gun policy - unlike NY. I encountered two individuals openly showing me their *loaded* guns just outside the gates, warning me about the old lady with rifle / scope and her enjoyment on seeing things go "pop". Just saying ... its Arizona, yo.

     History
The Black Canyon Greyhound park was opened in 1967 by Albert and David Funk, along with half owners the Jacobs family of Buffalo, N.Y. much to the dismay of local residents who originally petitioned to halt construction. The Funk family had been in the racing business since 1942 and this track was one of the six greyhound tracks owned by the family in Arizona in addition to one horse racing facility in Prescott. An interesting twist is the fact that their partners, the Jacobs family, also owned the Emprise Corp. which was convicted in Federal Court of conspiring to hide the underworld ownership of a Las Vegas Casino.

The Funk Family sometimes labeled their operation as the "Funks Greyhound Racing Circuit" and this facility had marginal success after opening as the newly constructed I-17 freeway allowed residents from Phoenix easy access to the track and the entertainment it provided. Not much is recorded about the every day operations at the track during the time it was operating other than it had 12 races nightly Wednesday thru Sunday starting at 8PM and admission started at 50 cents. One advertisement from July 1976 boasts such things as "thrill a minute action", "extravagant steak dinners", "comfortable air conditioned grandstands", and " the excitement of a lot of people on their feet, cheering home the winners.".

I do know that the Funk family started having difficulties with the state gaming commission in the mid 1970's resulting in the termination of the permits for the Black Canyon Greyhound park and one other park due to fact that their partners(Emprise Corp) had been convicted of a felony in Las Vegas, making their license illegal. A back and forth legal battle ensued over the next few years and In 1976 the state of Arizona declared that the Funk family had a monopoly on dog racing in the state of Arizona and a break up of the company was ordered. At that point David Funk declared all of their tracks for sale and even suggested that the state or Arizona buy them.

By 1980 the Funk family had 4 tracks left in Arizona after the state ordered break up and were wanting to sell their remaining tracks to a buyer in Wisconsin for $10 million dollars. The sale of their dog tracks was finalized to George Gillett, Jr. in late 1980 and the Funk family was officially out of the racing business. Nothing is known about the period from 1980 until 1982 but we can say for sure that the Funk brothers got out at the right time because the track ceased operations in 1982 and became the host to various swap meets and other events. At one point in time the dog kennels were converted into storage units and the northern half of the property was used as a for rent mini-storage facility. Today the entire property sits empty and waiting for its final fate to be rendered. A proposal was submitted to the county in 2008 for a 60 acre RV park but the plans never got off the ground.
