There are 4 intact or partially intact buildings on the site that are in varying stages of decay. The estate is very overgrown and dense jungle/rain forest surrounds the site. There are many noteworthy botanical specimens on the site including feral agricultural species such as coffee.

UPDATE: As of Jun 26, 2022 - the Queen's Retreat was unfortunately burned to the ground. https://www.khon2....own-to-the-ground/
The estate house features a great example of Victorian era colonial architecture and has a chimney which is a very odd feature of a home in Hawaii. The structure is quite atypical of architecture in Hawaii and features ornate frieze work and a sweeping green metal roof. The site also features The Queen's Bath (the only one of its type in the islands at the time of its construction), and the remains of the main carriage way which is majestically lined with Royal Palms. Archeological features in the area date back to the 1400s and there are petroglyphs at springs in the area. There is also a heiau nearby.

The land was purchased and the estate created by the Boyd family in 1869. The Boyds regularly entertained the Hawaiian Royal family at the estate. Queen Liliuokalani is said to have written "aloha "oe" in 1878 while at the estate. The Irwin family bought the estate in 1893 and began growing coffee there. The estate has changed ownership many times since then. It was used as a military headquarters and retreat and then a Girl Scout Camp in the 1940s. The site was last used as a residence by the Hedemann family and the site has lain vacant since 1985.
