Red Star Line, a shipping company, (the one with a red star in its flag) was one of the most important companies around 1900 to ship immigrants to the USA. Between 1873 and 1935 the Red Star Line shipping company transported almost three million people from Antwerp to the USA and Canada. The buildings of the Red Star Line, still exists.
They are located in Antwerp on the Scheldt, from where the ships set off on the transatlantic voyage. It remains a place of remembrance, a "lieu de mémoire" for the millions of emigrants who set out for a new life in the States via Antwerp.

The buildings were used as a medical centre. In those days the USA had stringent medical requirements for people to be allowed to enter. When someone didn't meet these requirements, they were sent back. The USA had made it mandatory to the shipping companies that they had to take back the people who weren't allowed to enter with no cost to the people trying to immigrate. This resulted in buildings being constructed on the european side, because it was much more profitable to get rid of the people who couldn't meet the requirements back home. These 3 buildings were thus a big cleaning facility (to get rid of lice,..) combined with a doctor's office.

     Future Plans
In the future these decayed buildings will be converted to a museum in remembrance of the immigrating masses, whom used RSL.
