History
Until it closed in July 2007, Indianapolis Coke, the Manufacturing Division of Citizens Energy Group, produced coke, manufactured gas and various chemical by-products for industrial use.
Coke is a solid carbon material that is used as a fuel primarily by steel mills and foundries. The plant, located at 2950 Prospect Street on the southeast side of Indianapolis, produced about 577,000 tons of coke in 2006.
Indianapolis Coke had been in operation since 1909 and once produced all of the gas used for heating and other purposes in Marion County. Coke oven gas started to be phased out of the gas distribution operation during the 1950s with the introduction of natural gas transported to Indianapolis via interstate pipelines. By 1998 coke oven gas was completely phased out of the gas distribution system.
Demolition appears to have finished mid-late 2017.

Future Plans
"Citizens Energy Group proposes a long-range Reuse Vision for the former Indianapolis Coke Plant site and nearby parcels that is intended to promote recreation, neighborhood revitalization and job creation on the southeast side. This Reuse Vision is consistent with Citizens’ Vision, Mission and Values that stress unparalleled service excellence, sound financial management, environmental stewardship and long-term benefit for the community.
The Reuse Vision commits Citizens to:
Partnerships - We will seek qualified partners who are experts in redevelopment, rather than trying to independently redevelop the property.
Demolition - We will begin demolishing Indianapolis Coke plant structures in 2011. We will communicate with the community prior to demolition.
Environmental Remediation - We will continue working collaboratively with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management as we remediate environmental impacts on the property to support intended land uses. All remediation plans are open to public review.
Community Dialogue - We will seek input from the community as we finalize and implement the Reuse Vision."
