 Overview
 Description
There are two completed tunnels that are in the middle of nowhere up Shoemaker canyon. In the 1960's there was an effort to push through this canyon to the other side but the road itself was never completed.

The first tunnel is beautifully finished, wide enough for two generous lanes plus two sidewalks, and it is in pristine condition (portal says 1961). It was fenced off, but the fences are completely out of the way now. It’s more than 2000 feet.

A mile further and there is a second Tunnel (1962) which is not as well manicured – the walls were never finished – it’s interesting to see what’s behind the smooth concrete of the first tunnel.

Upon exiting the second tunnel, the road abruptly ends at a steep drop off. This is obviously where they gave up the effort. There is a footpath to the left that winds 1 ½ miles further through a lot of brush.

There is evidence of preliminary construction activity – a few pipes and a large water tank, but soon you’re bushwhacking. Tried to make it around the ridge to try for a view of the Bridge to Nowhere, but despite having maps, there is no viable trail anymore.

     History
Urban legend has it that these two tunnels were built during the cold war in the 1960's in order to provide an alternate escape route for Los Angeles residents in the event of a nuclear attack.

Directions: From Interstate 210 in Azusa, take Azusa Avenue (Hwy 39) north about 12 miles to the junction at the East Fork Road (8.6 miles from the forest station at the mouth of the canyon). Turn right (east). Cross the bridge and drive 3.3 miles to Shoemaker Canyon Road on the left. Turn left unto Shoemaker Road and drive 2 miles on paved road to the locked gate. Park in the parking area and hike up the trail. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required.
