Shoreham Yards was built in the late 1800s by the grain millers who went on eventually to found General Mills and Pillsbury, among other notable feats. Feeling hindered by James J. Hill's stranglehold on the transportation market and his rail company's high prices, the millers founded the Soo Line Railroad (had a longer name then) to get grain to their Minneapolis mills and their flour out to the world, eventually transforming Minneapolis into the Milling and Flour Capital of the World, and essentially putting Minneapolis and Minnesota on the map. Soo Line's home yard was the massive Shoreham Yards; 230-some acres today, employing upwards of 1,000 workers in its heydey. Steam locomotives were built at the site, tools were invented at the site, and the site was an all-encompassing self-contained rail village, with even a greenhouse for train table decor and some edibles, a passenger depot , a blacksmith shop, its own steam plant, and of course, the last remaining, intact roundhouse (older than the re-creation in St. Paul's Jackson yard) in our region. In fact, Jackson contains many remnants from Shoreham, since so much of Jackson had to be re-created. The site was listed as one of the Top 10 Endangered Sites in Minnesota a couple years ago, and remains that way now. The roundhouse and the tiny passenger depot are about all that remain of the site that transported Minneapolis and indeed the state to world-wide fame and economic importance and influence. It is now used as a rail container transfer station. ~Gayle Bonneville, Minneapolis, MN
