The Continental Night Club has been around since at least the early 1960s, perhaps before, but opened under its' current name in or around 1970. From about the early '80s until closing, The Continental, also known as "The Cont" by regular patrons, was home to an eclectic crowd. Punks at first, then gays, then an alternative crowd in general, before essentially becoming a goth club around the early '90s, lasting until its' demise on the night of August 3, 2005. Many well-known musical artists graced the stage on the first floor, some not so well-known when they did so. The Goo Goo Dolls got their start at The Continental, with Johnny Reznik serving as a barback, and Robby Takac occasionally manning the soundboard. Other well-known bands/artists to have played were Billy Idol, when he was with Generation X, Cyndi Lauper, White Zombie, Gene Loves Jezebel, Daniel Ash of Bauhaus, Switchblade Symphony, The Alarm, ohGr (side project of Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy), Anthrax, The Misfits, Electric Hellfire Club, The Crüxshadows, and Buffalo's own The Fems, who, after breaking up, played annual Christmas reunion shows there until it closed. In addition to its' first floor stage, the second floor had what was considered to be one of the best dance floors in Buffalo. The DJs played an eclectic mix, from alternative rock, to new wave, to goth and industrial, synthpop, electroclash, and more. Despite a majority of the patrons being of the gothic or rivethead persuasion in its' later years, as long as they didn't start trouble, no one was ever turned away for being different from the rest, either in dress, race, musical preference, or a number of other things. In fact, variety and acceptance was a large part of what made The Continental so popular. Frat boy, goth, socialite, whatever. Everyone could walk in, and feel like they belonged. The club will be missed by many, but it will always live on in the memories of the patrons who cherished their time in one of the best clubs ever to grace Buffalo. Edit: I'd also like to add that a rather unique drink, the Purple Motherf**ker, was created there by bartender-turned-manager Dale Ellison, and can be found for sale at Club Diablo (517 Washington Street in Buffalo), which is owned by former Cont head of security Jesse Zueffle.

The Continental is supposedly scheduled for demolition on the afternoon of September 28, 2009, so that its' space can be used for a parking lot/entryway for a boutique hotel in the building next door, also owned by Mark Croce, which is being renovated. Edit 9/29/09: The Cont is apparently still up. I've left a message with someone at Waterbourne Construction Advisors, who are in charge of the demo, to find out when it's coming down. Hopefully, they'll get back to me.
