The West Mansion was a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These designations provide recognition and access to financial incentives that encourage owners to voluntarily preserve historic buildings, but they do not prevent demolition. Some building remain on the property, but the mansion was demolished in 2019.

The mansion has to be one the coolest locations I've found. This place has amazing tilework throughout the entire building! Hurricane Ike barely even made a scratch on the property. The entire surrounding area got trashed but this place was just built too damn well. A couple of missing roof tiles and a few broken windows are the only evidence left from the major storm. The mansion was built for "Silver dollar" Jim West Jr. who's father made a fortune in cattle ranching and in the lumber industry. Jim was known to be a very peculiar man who had an awesome fleet of 40 Cadillacs !! The residence was designed by Joseph Finger who built the Ben Milam,The Plaza Hotel and Houston's oldest department stores , Battlesteins. Contruction was completed on the residence in 1930. When complete it included 6 bedrooms, a sleeping porch, 12 bathrooms, a solarium, a mahogany paneled study, ballroom, huge dining room, music room, two-story living room and a private barbers room. Jim passed in 57' and stated in his will that after his death his mansion would never again be used as a residence. It sat vacant for many years and was in serious need of repair. Rice University purchased the property and fully restored the entire house. Restoration included replicating missing tiles and iron work, restoring paneling and stenciling, and correcting structural problems. Contruction was completed in 1978 and opened as a Lunar and Planetary Instutite. The L.P.I. closed in 1991 and has remained vacant since then.

Hopefully the nonprofit group, Preserved in Time, can raise the 11 million dollars needed to save the property. If not, I'm sure they'll just demolish it and build another stupid shopping center.
