Austin's colony at San Jacinto as a Latin teacher and Austin's Spanish interpreter. In later years, he worked as a banker, farmer, teacher and a trustee of Gonzales College. The school opened it's doors in 1958, closed in 2006 and has been boarded up ever since then. The school changed their name and moved to a new, 2 story building. "The Pilgrim Academy' now offers K-8. The place is for sale and the sign doesn't advertise the building . only the property.
