  •  Interesting Features
The power station, despite having suffered of vandalism and metal theft, is mostly intact. The turbine hall with its antique marble switchboard is a good example of 1920s industrial design and houses probably the only abandoned steam turbine in the country. The control room, on the other hand, is nearly intact, with operating manuals and other interesting bits and pieces still there.

The groundwood/planer building is more vandalized, but still contains nearly intact machinery. There's also a narrow-gauge railway system with carriages that can be pushed around.

     History
In 1927 Raahe Oy, who also owned and operated the steam sawmill of Martinniemi just a rock's throw away on the mainland, built a groundwood mill and an adjacent power station on the island of Laitakari. The area was later owned by Rauma-Repola Oy and finally UPM Kymmene Oyj, the multinational pulp, paper and timber manufacturer who would like to redevelope the area and demolish the old buildings.

Although the groundwood mill was built in the late 1920s, it operated continuously only between 1940 and 1946 and after that, until 1964 when it was closed as unprofitable, only from time to time. The grinding machinery was removed in the late 60s or early 70s, and in 1976 it was rebuilt and reopened as a planing mill. It is unknown when the buildings were abandoned for good, but in the late 90s when the first explorers visited the site there was still electricity and signs of activity. The building has since suffered of vandalism and metal theft, and the owner would've demolished it if the municipality official had not intervened.

The power station, equipped with three sawdust-fired boilers and one 70 hp Stal-Laval steam turbine with Asea generator, was used continuously to power the groundwood/planer mill and the nearby sawmill until it was deemed obsolete and out-of-date in the late 1980s even though the control systems and boilers were modernized in the 1970s when the planer mill was built. Although the buildings have suffered of vandalism and metal theft, the power station is one of the few nearly intact examples of 1920s industrial architecture and design. The steam turbine, still mostly intact, is probably the only abandoned one in Finland.

The railway to Laitakari and Martinniemi was closed in 1986 and the tracks were removed in 1999 (1, 2).

Even though the buildings are pretty close to each other and connected by pipelines and catwalks, the road between them is still in use.

     Future Plans
The owner would like to demolish the old buildings and redevelope the area, but the municipality officials are against it. The buildings are also protected, but just like everywhere, it hasn't prevented them from falling into disrepair.

The groundwood mill caught fire on February 21st, 2011. As of August 2011 it was reportedly being demolished.

The power station was demolished in 2017.
