The main complex is the largest area, spanning at least a dozen city blocks. Loading bays and railroads are on the eastern and southern sides. On the western side, facing N. Lindbergh, is the front gate and employee parking lots. Office space is near the front entrance, as is the cafeteria and a presentation hall. The northern side faces highway 270.

This a huge manufacturing/assembly complex, sprawled across 155 acres of land and two and a half million square feet of indoor area. It's enormous and takes hours to traverse. The car building machinery was of special interest, and every area was accessible from within (including the roof). Parts storage, painting bays, assembly lines, office space, tire tunnels, engineering workshops, a cafeteria... one of the most interesting sites I've ever visited. But be warned, the security is tight and the site is scheduled for redevelopment, so many of the most intriguing elements have been removed since our last documented visit.

Closed since the spring of 2006, this was the Ford Motor Company's Hazelwood Assembly Plant, best known for the production of the Aerostar minivan and more recently the Explorer SUV. The facility employed around 3,000. Current plans for the property including turning the complex into into 11 new buildings totaling about 2.6 million square feet of commercial and industrial space.
