Built in 1901 and finished in 1906 this became the main home of the Ludlum Steel Company, The first ever batch of stainless steel made was made at this plant, originally owned by Edwin Corning in the 30's Ludlum would merge with the massive steel giant Allegheny Steel Corp, they would now be know as Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. This great plant innovated many new steel alloys, including being the ones to invent titanium. Throughout it's history it go on to employee around 5,000 employees during the Korean war. This plant even won the US Department of War's "E" Award for helping the WW2 War effort by making steel for planes. In 1951 they would roll uranium for the US government's Hanford Project, that would be moved up to the Dunkirk Plant at the end of 1952. They steel company went on to make special metals for everything, From tennis rackets to space shuttles. But it's demise would soon be coming. In 1971 the management bought both the Dunkirk Plant and the Watervliet Plant, they would form the new company called Al Tech Specialty Steel, this company would be bought by 2 different companies, Rio Grande Steel and Sammi Steel. These companies owned the plants at different times and were accused of reaping assets from the plant. In 2000 the plant dwindled and closed up for good, the Extrusion building would be used by a company called "Altx" for extruding steel pipes, they would only last till 2002.
