     History
Originally a gold mining community established in 1862. The camp was founded in 1896 and quickly became the largest and most famous resort in the canyon. Guests arrived by a four-horse stagecoach after a 12 mile trip up the canyon, which required 40+ river crossings. In 1925 the canyon road was paved, making the trip too easy and the resort less romantic, and the resort declined.

January / February 2005 flooding devastated this once striving campground and community and wiped it out to its rocky bones. After two previous storms saturated the local mountains, a third massive storm hit a deadly third strike on January 9th, 2005, causing the worse flooding in recent history... and more storms kept rolling through.

The camp area of the canyon lies upon a major earthquake fault; coupled with periodic forest fires, steep neighboring slopes and landslide potential, the area is a fascinating geologic site.

The property has been reportedly sold to speculating investors who later discovered that the property was impractical to build upon. Meanwhile, the camp is boarded-up and closed.
