     History
The first railroad crossing at St. Louis was the Eads Bridge in 1876. Prior to that all rail traffic was carried across on barges necessitating a jungle of switching yards on the east riverfront. The area of East St. Louis was still marked by an incredible density of rail infrastructure into the mid-20th century. This early 20th century complex is typical of its type with steam engine maintenance facilities and operations buildings showing a variety of construction from heavy timber to steel.

     Future Plans
This site will probably be cleared during the re-routing of interstate 55 caused by the proposed interstate 70 bridge to the north.

    Indeed it has.
