     Interesting Features
I was inside the station in the late 1990's. At that time, you could easily walk inside. But the interior had been gutted. All of the decorative plaster, stucco, wood and metal were gone. The building had been stripped down to the bare cement.

     History
1850 - The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad is founded, serving the Midwest.

1870 - CB&Q RR makes its way to downtown Omaha.

1890 - A temporary building was first erected on the present site in anticipation of the construction of a new and grander edifice to be completed by the Union Depot Company, a partnership between the Union Pacific and Burlington Railroads. Later that year, construction was halted due to Union Pacific's financial difficulties.

1897 - The Burlington RR announced plans to build a new station. Famed Omaha architect Thomas Rogers Kimball designed the building.

1898 - This new Burlington station opens on July 4th, in time for the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition, a glittering international showcase that attracted visitors to Omaha from around the world. The total cost of the station was $408,000, about $15m in today's money.

1908 - The Chicago Record wrote, 'The handsomest railway station ever seen is the Burlington Station at Omaha. It is an artistic gem and looks like a Grecian Temple.'

1929-30 - The station was extensively remodeled and has a grand re-opening on Sept 4th. The remodeling changed the building to conform to the elements of the Neo-Classical Revival, which simplified the exterior, removing the granite columns, and much of the external detail. Twenty-four of the original columns were moved intact to Lincoln, where today they stand between Memorial Stadium and the Coliseum.

1954 - The station saw a major parking plaza erected with lights and canopy, and a circular drive that enabled people to drop passengers at the station.

1960's - During the late 60's, train travel was greatly reduced and several areas of the station fell into disrepair.

1971 - Passenger service is turned over to Amtrak.

1974 - Amtrak moves service to a temporary station. This same year Omaha Station is added to the list of National Register of Historic Places.

1983 - Amtrak officially opens its new station, 220ft directly to the east of Omaha Station.

1985 - The interior was gutted by an architectural salvager who removed and sold every interior fitting. The four enormous chandeliers were taken down, one of which was broken and was sold in pieces.

2004 - Two investors purchased the building. Renovations were planned to transform the building through adaptive re-use into private residences called "The Burlington".

2013 - Hearst Television announced the purchase of Burlington Station.

2015 - The building's renovation is completed, designed by Leo A Daly Company. ABC television's Omaha affiliate KETV moves in and goes live.

     Future Plans
Both the building and its location are not favorable for conversion to residential, so I doubt that anything will happen.

On June 5, 2013, Hearst Television announced the purchase of Burlington Station, which will become the new broadcast facility for Omaha's ABC affiliate, KETV (Channel 7) and will be remodeled as a state-of-the-art broadcast and web media facility.

2015 - KETV channel 7 moves in and goes live. They will likely stay for the unforeseen future.
