 Overview
 Description
A good chunk of current Salt Lake City has come crashing to the ground! This is the 3 block, 20 acre center of town between 200 West and North Temple to State Street and South Temple streets. The Crossroads Plaza, ZCMI Mall, and the Key Bank Tower, and other office buildings were demolished (and some still in the process) to make way for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints "City Creek Center" project. The Key Bank Tower housed Key Bank offices, law firms, and other businesses. The first 3 levels of the tower included Crossroads Plaza shops; the basement was an open-ceiling cafeteria with other shops.

(The cafeteria environment on ground floor of the tower had an open ceiling where the steel rafters and tube vents were painted black, and the atmosphere was semi-dark with many bright, colorful neon signs. To me, the plaza was still a very modern and clean place to shop and eat. I've had many luncheons there. My ex worked there when the place was all decked out for Christmas wrapping gifts or handing out Hickory Farm samples.)

     History
I happened to be in SLC just the very night before the Key Bank Tower implosion was scheduled. It would go down just 10 hours after my visit the evening before.

The current 3-block area was built in the late 1970's replacing many old historical shops, blocks, and typical older city style buildings that used to stand for many years prior (those built in the late 1800's and early 1900's). Most of the newly constructed area at the time opened around August of 1980. This included the Crossroads Plaza and new Key Bank Tower, a large parking garage, renovation of the ZCMI Mall and many other reconstruction and improvements. In that same period in time (my mid-teenage years), I saw one of the first movies shown at the new Crossroads Plaza Cineplex Theaters just after the plaza opened; Blues Brothers with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd. Also, I've enjoyed the last 27 years of visiting or shopping there. Fond memories indeed! -DrJav In Wonderland

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) will build a huge complex and another sky scraper in the area. It's called the City Creek Center project. See the "downtownrising.com" link.
