The Log Cabin Mine is an impressive site located north-west of Lee Vining, California. Located at the 9600 ft. elevation level and overlooking nearby Mono Lake, this site's scenic beauty is equal to its mining remnants, of which it has much. The Log Cabin Mine's gold deposits were first discovered in 1910, and for the next 30 years the property was developed into a large and productive mining camp. A large mill was erected, supplied with water from a nearby stream by means of a pipeline supported by several pumphouses. Plenty of worker's cabins and other supporting structures helped to ensure the mine's self-sufficiency, which was required due to its remote location high in the Sierra's, where winters were especially difficult. Despite its good productivity, the mine was forced to shut down after President Roosevelt's executive order that ceased gold mining during World War II. After the war, attempts to rework the mine were launched, but the site's remote location and poor condition after being left abandoned to the elements for so many years took their toll on the buildings and attempts to restart production were halted for good in 1956. Eventually the site was donated to the U.S. Government and the Boy Scouts, which have a summer wilderness camp located nearby.
